The Shaw EcoVillage Program (SEV) has created a “subsidiary.” During the first summer program students researched transportation in the Shaw neighborhood and determined that bicycle travel is efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly. The problem is that many inner city youth do not have bicycles. And so was born the idea for Re-Cycle-a-Bike, a program to train neighborhood youth to repair old bicycles and through sweat equity to earn a bicycle.

Re-Cycle-a-Bike has rented space in the Shaw neighborhood and now operates a business under the name of Chain Reaction Youth Bike Shop and is located at 1701 6th Street, NW (the corner of 6th and R Streets, NW). Bike Shop hours are extended for the summer:

Tuesdays, 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Wednesdays, 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Thursdays 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Fridays, 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Saturdays, 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM

CLOSED Sundays and Mondays
